A Home 'to Do' List for September

With summer days drifting away soon, we will have the cooler days of autumn. Now is the perfect time to get a jump on fall home improvements, repairs and maintenance.

Making a 'To Do' list will keep you focused and organized. Start off with all the projects you started at the beginning of summer and haven't completed. September is the best month to catch up as it's still nice outdoors.

Start at the top We have had a gorgeous sunny and dry summer, before the cold and wet arrives you need to inspect your roof for leaks and damage.

Take a look at the shingles are any bent or loose or even missing? Get them fixed before the rain or even critters get in.

If you can, climb up into your attic and get a good look around. Keep it dark and look around - do you see light shining through?

That means you have some cracks or holes that need taking care of. Be especially careful around the chimney and edges of the house.

Summer clearout The stores have them so why shouldn't you? That yard sale you were going to have in spring that you kept putting off - now is the time to actually get it done!

Go through your closets if you haven't worn it in over a year, it's time for it to go. Sort out the boxes in the basement.

Do you still need what's in them? Like most people your garage probably isn't for your car but rather a catchall for stuff.

Make three piles: keep, donate and sell. You will be freeing up space in your home and filling your pockets with a little extra money.

Garden care With the soil still warm and autumn rain soon to come now is the ideal time to plant trees, shrubs and evergreens, make sure to fertilize them and get their roots growing. Order your spring flower bulbs and get them planted before the first frost.

Plant some hearty fall-blooming plants like colourful chrysanthemums, bright black-eyed susans, ornamental kale or bold Dahlias to keep your garden vibrant through September and into October.

Looking forward to the colder weather and the falling leaves take the time to prune your trees and shrubs.

You'll spend less time cleaning eaves troughs if you do it now. Make sure you have good clearance with tree branches around your home - you need at least 10 feet around your chimney flue.

Cozy up inside The summer nights will soon get chilly so make it cozy inside. Pull out your throws and air them out so they are ready for cuddling up when it's cool.

Add some throw pillows for extra comfort on the couch. The colder nights means you will need better bedding. If you didn't in the spring, now's the time to dry clean your duvets and comforters.

Summer is still here for a few weeks, so take advantage of these last warm, sunny days to tackle these important tasks in and around your home.
